Appreciation from the WHO Director-General for the recent redesignation process as a Collaborating Centre
Lyon, France, April 7-9, 2026
Within the framework of the Global Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres, currently taking place in Lyon, the Director-General of the World Health Organization expressed his appreciation for the recent redesignation of the European Centre for Disaster Medicine (CEMEC) as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Security, CBRNe & EMT Initiative. This expression of appreciation, emerging from ongoing exchanges and discussions among WHO Collaborating Centres, represents a significant recognition of the role that CEMEC continues to play in the fields of disaster medicine, emergency preparedness and response, and global health security, particularly in addressing complex and evolving risks, including those related to CBRNe.
The redesignation carries even greater significance in light of the Centre’s origins, established through a longstanding partnership between the Republic of San Marino, the Council of Europe, and the World Health Organization. It builds upon a consolidated path that dates back to its first designation in 1991 as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Disaster Medicine, marking the beginning of a structured and continuous collaboration with WHO in the field of disaster medicine and emergency preparedness.
In the context of the Forum, which brings together WHO Collaborating Centres from across the globe, the importance of strengthening synergies, expertise, and multidisciplinary approaches clearly emerges as essential to addressing today’s global health challenges and to supporting the development of increasingly resilient, integrated, and effective systems.
