Beyond borders, before the flames

When wildfires appear on the horizon, there is also a quieter moment, when people come together to listen, share, and learn.That was the spirit in Barcelona during the 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Workshop on Wildfires, organised by DG ECHO, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the PPRD Mediterranean Programme, and the On-Site Technical Assistance.
CEMEC joined more than 100 professionals from over 20 countries, all with the same understanding: wildfires no longer belong to one season or one place. They affect us all.
What made these days meaningful was not only the discussion on early warning systems, technology, and coordination, but also the human side of preparedness. Experiences were shared openly, limits were acknowledged, and solutions were built together.
For us, being there meant listening first, contributing where possible, and building relationships that matter long before an emergency starts. Because resilience doesn’t begin when the fire breaks out, it begins with trust, dialogue, and cooperation.
We are grateful to the organisers for creating such an open, constructive space for dialogue and cooperation.
We leave Barcelona grateful and motivated, convinced that working together before the flames is the only way forward.
