From Vienna to the Mediterranean: Water, Security, and Cooperation at the IAEA General Conference
Vienna 15-19 September 2025
From Vienna to the Mediterranean: Water, Security & Cooperation at the IAEA General ConferenceThis September, Vienna once again became the stage for one of the most important global gatherings on nuclear science and technology, the 69th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference. With more than 3,000 participants, 148 official statements, and over 100 side events, the Conference confirmed its role as a unique platform for dialogue and cooperation.
It was an honor to take part as speaker, presenting the initiative Water4Stability: Building Safety and Resilience in the Euro-Mediterranean - The EUROMED PROTECT-NET Project.
Water is not just a vital resource. It is a strategic element that connects nuclear safety, public health, disaster preparedness, and regional stability. Our contribution highlighted how EUROMED PROTECT-NET, supported by the Council of Europe, is strengthening cooperation among health authorities, civil protection agencies, research centers, and institutions to ensure resilience and security in the face of scarcity, contamination, and new global challenges.
In parallel with the IAEA’s work, including the new ATLAS programme on nuclear applications in marine environments, our initiative underlines that technology alone is not enough. What we need is integration, preparedness, and dialogue.
