Migration today does not begin at a border crossing. It begins on a screen.
Rome, March 26, 2026
The Regional Council of Lazio Region (Italy) hosted Cyber-Immigration: Digital Routes, National Security and Integration in a Hyperconnected World, a high-level conference where institutions, academics, law enforcement, and educators came together around a question that can no longer be deferred: how does the digital sphere shape, enable, and threaten migration?CEMEC was honored to take part as an active speaker. Our contribution addressed three interconnected dimensions: the growing exposure of migrants to cyber-fraud, online radicalisation, and algorithmic manipulation; the risk that disinformation and coordinated digital campaigns pose to national security and humanitarian response; and the urgent need for structured prevention programs in schools and communities.
Three sessions, many voices, one shared conclusion: the physical and digital dimensions of migration can no longer be addressed in isolation. Borders are crossed. Algorithms are not neutral.
Grateful to the Regional Council of Lazio Region and all speakers and organizers for building a space of rigorous, necessary dialogue.
