These last few days have concluded an intense week of work in San Marino, dedicated to addressing some fundamental challenges:- CBRN Preparedness, with Prof. Roberto Mugavero and Dr. Heejun Shin, MD, MS, FIBODM, a member of the WADEM Board and a dear friend of CEMEC. A heartfelt thanks also to Dr. Rajeev Fernando, who was called to participate in emergency operations following the earthquake in Venezuela.
-Global Health Emergency Corps (GHEC), with Dr. Oleg Storozhenko, World Health Organization.
- Disaster Evaluation Research, with Prof. Ernesto A. Pretto, Jr., MD, MPH, and Prof. Knut Ole Sundnes.
-Tabletop Simulation Exercises, during which the Romanian and Spanish teams, historical partners of CEMEC, helped strengthen decision-making skills under pressure.
Our gratitude goes to Their Excellencies the Captains Regent of the Republic of San Marino, the Secretariat of State for Health and the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture; to the entire CEMEC team, especially Loretta Bellucci and Daniela Fiorentini, and to our interns Arooj Abid, Tashfeen Akram, and Mohammad Usman Imtiaz.
We also thank the Sammarinese Red Cross and its coordinator, Giorgio Urbinati; the Civil Police, Fire Prevention and Civil Protection Section, led by Athos Gattei; the Civil Protection volunteers and the Director of the State Office, Pietro Falcioni; and the numerous organizations that welcomed our guests.
Our appreciation goes to the participants and speakers, and to Prof. Donald Donahue, WADEM President, for his vision in promoting synergies in the field of disaster medicine.
Special thanks go to the colleagues and friends who accepted CEMEC's invitation to contribute: the World Health Organization (WHO); the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), represented by Paolo Felice DALLA VILLA; the Italian Civil Protection Department, represented by Marco Leonardi; the Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare (SCAW), represented by Lena Tuominen and Andres Ellexelius; and the Romanian National Simulation Centre in Emergency and Disaster Medicine - SMURD, represented by Emilia Turucz, Diana Vicas, Alexandra Petrovan, and Alina-Vannessa-Gabriela-Georgiana Crăciun, along with the Spanish team from the Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), Giulio Fenzi and Alberto Lanchares Ortiz.
The CEMEC Winter School 2026, scheduled for October, and the CEMEC Summer School 2027, scheduled for June, will be dedicated to Health Security, CBRNe, Emergency Medical Teams and Disaster Medicine.
Both editions will bring together the expertise of a Council of Europe Centre and a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre, through immersive and hands-on training courses: virtual reality, simulation-based learning, model-based tabletop exercises, and field activities. If you're building your future in this sector, we look forward to seeing you in San Marino.
