CBRNe Disaster & Incident Risk Management

Online course - San Marino 29-30 June 2023

The European Centre for Disaster Medicine -CEMEC-, in collaboration with BIDMC - Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians-Harvard Medical School, the State University of the Republic of San Marino-Center for Security Studies-the University of Rome Tor Vergata-Department of Electronic Engineering, and the Observatory on Security and CBRNe Defence, successfully organized the "CBRNe Disaster & Incident Risk Management" course. The Course, held on 29th and 30th June 2023, aimed to enhance the participants' knowledge and skills in effectively managing CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and explosive) events at regional and national levels.
Given the increasing trend of natural, incidental, and intentional CBRNe threats, there is a pressing need to improve risk analysis, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery capabilities for unconventional incidents. The Course, which saw the theoretical part followed by a practical part that actively involved the 20 participants representing an international audience, was specifically designed to address these concerns and provide emergency management personnel, emergency medical services, fire service, governmental administrative officials, healthcare professionals, law enforcement personnel, armed forces, public health officials, public safety communications teams, and public works personnel with the fundamental knowledge required to handle CBRNe events effectively.
Throughout the two-day training program, participants engaged in a wide range of topics that included CBRNe materials, prevention and protection measures, procedures and standards, risk assessment, response to CBRNe events/incidents, and inter-agency coordination and communication. The Course encouraged active participation and discussion among trainees to foster a collaborative learning environment.
The European Centre for Disaster Medicine and its partners have once again demonstrated their commitment to advancing knowledge and capabilities in disaster management. By equipping professionals with the necessary skills to handle CBRNe incidents effectively, this Course contributes to the overall preparedness and resilience of European nations and beyond.
