Safety Under Fire: Protecting Those Who Protect Us
From warzones to disaster sites, healthcare workers and first responders put their lives on the line, often with little protection themselves. At CEMEC, we believe this must change.
That’s why we're proud to host the side event “Safety of First Responders and Healthcare Workers in Conflict Zones and Non-Permissive Environments” as part of the EUROMED PROTECT-NET Forum, that will take place on 22–24 May 2025, in San Marino.
Together with leading partners, the University of San Marino, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, the Observatory on Security and CBRNe Defence, the Parliamentary Assembly of Mediterranean, and under the umbrella of the Council of Europe’s EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement, we’re bringing together a powerful lineup of experts from global organisations.
We will examine the critical risks and shared responsibilities involved in protecting those who provide care in crisis settings, environments where the safety of medical teams and crisis response personnel, as well as the respect for humanitarian principles, must remain a core and collective commitment. This side event will offer a space for reflection, dialogue, and the exchange of best practices from experts actively engaged on the frontlines of humanitarian emergencies, disaster response, and health security.
In particular, the agenda will include two sessions, guided by internationally recognized professionals from WHO, MSF, ICRC, and prominent academic and operational institutions, ensuring a high-level dialogue enriched by field experience and global expertise.
